Alum-Treated Poultry Litter as a Fertilizer Source

چکیده
Alum used for poultry houses is sold under the commercial name of “Al+ Clear” in either liquid or dry form. Alum should not be confused with other litter treatment chemicals such as “PLT” (poultry litter treatment), as PLT is comprised mainly of sodium bisulfate (NaHSO4). Although PLT is effective at reducing ammonia levels, pathogens in house, energy costs, and potentially increasing forage yields, this product will have little impact on P solubility and subsequent runoff concentrations upon land application of treated litter. For alum, the active component is aluminum and for PLT the active component is the bisulfate (HSO4 -), not to be confused with sulfate (SO4 2-). Both alum and PLT acidify litter. However, application of the treated litter to soils for crop nutrients does not cause the soil to acidify. Alum is typically applied to poultry houses at a rate of 5 percent to 10 percent by weight of the litter (or 0.1 lb/bird to 0.2 lb/bird). Thus, for a typical poultry house (16,000 ft2) containing 20,000 broilers, a 5 percent alum application would equal 1 ton alum per flock or 125 lb/1000 ft2. For a 10 percent application, 2 tons of alum would be applied per flock or 250 lb/1000 ft2. These calculations assume that an average broiler weighing 4 lbs produces 2 lbs of manure. For larger birds (6 lbs), the recommended alum application rate increases to 0.15 and 0.30 lbs/bird for a 5 percent and 10 percent rate, respectively. Effect of alum treatment on the concentration of total and ureolytic microorganisms in poultry litter.
Microbial mineralization of urea and uric acid in poultry litter results in the production of ammonia, which can lead to decreased poultry performance, malodorous emissions, and loss of poultry litter value as a fertilizer. Despite the fact that this is a microbial process, little is known about how the microbial populations, especially ammonia-producing (ureolytic) organisms in poultry litter,...
متن کاملLong-term effects of poultry litter, alum-treated litter, and ammonium nitrate on aluminum availability in soils.
Research has shown that alum [Al(2)(SO(4))(3).14H(2)O] applications to poultry litter can greatly reduce phosphorus (P) runoff, as well as decrease ammonia (NH(3)) volatilization. However, the long-term effects of fertilizing with alum-treated litter are unknown. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the long-term effects of normal poultry litter, alum-treated litter, and ammonium nitra...

Field trials were established to compare alum-treated poultry litter (ATPL), normal poultry litter (NPL), and triple superphosphate (TSP) as fertilizer sources for corn (Zea mays L.) when applied at rates based on current litter management strategies in Virginia. Trials were established in the Costal Plain and Piedmont physiographic regions near Painter and Orange, VA, respectively. Nitrogen-ba...
متن کاملEffect of chemical and microbial amendment on phosphorus runoff from composted poultry litter.
Environmental impacts of composting poultry litter with chemical amendments at the field scale have not been well quantified. The objectives of this study were to measure (i) P runoff and (ii) forage yield and N uptake from small plots fertilized with composted and fresh poultry litter. Two composting studies, aerated using mechanical turning, were conducted in consecutive years. Composted litt...
متن کاملEvaluation of chemical amendments to reduce ammonia volatilization from poultry litter.
Ammonia volatilization from poultry litter often causes high levels of atmospheric ammonia in poultry houses, which is detrimental to both farm workers and birds. Ammonia emissions from houses also aggravate environmental problems, such as acid rain, and result in a loss of fertilizer nitrogen. The objectives of this study were to determine the effect of litter amendments on ammonia volatilizat...
